Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About the Benefits of Moving to Canada

I have been writing since April about Canada - I wrote about each of the Provinces/Territories, the amazing National Parks, and some of the unique things about Canada. I have also been writing about the steps to take if you are a "Lost Canadian" if you want to be able to become a Canadian citizen. It is important to keep in mind, if you live in the USA and are a "Lost Canadian" and decide to get your Canadian citizenship, it does not mean you have to move to Canada. It is a very positive thing to have duel citizenship.

But, if you are a "Lost Canadian" and receive your Canadian citizenship, moving to Canada is something you will be able to do if you decide to do so. With this in mind, what are the benefits to moving to Canada . . .

Living in Canada offers a high quality of life, universal healthcare, and an exceptionally safe, inclusive social environment. The country consistently ranks among the top global destinations due to its stable economy, world-class public systems, and expansive natural landscapes.
🩺 Comprehensive Healthcare System
  • Universal coverage: Canadian citizens and permanent residents access essential hospital and doctor services nearly free of cost.
  • Financial protection: The system prevents individuals from facing bankruptcy due to major medical emergencies.
  • Employer supplements: About two-thirds of Canadians utilize private insurance, often funded by employers, to cover prescription drugs, dental work, and vision care.
🏫 Top-Tier Education System
  • Funded K-12 schooling: Public primary and secondary education is fully funded, highly managed, and accessible to all residents.
  • Elite universities: Canada hosts multiple world-renowned higher education institutions which rank among the best globally.
  • Diverse pathways: Strong public support exists for vocational training, trade certifications, and apprenticeship programs.
👮 Safety, Stability, and Progressivism
  • Low crime rates: The country experiences significantly fewer violent crimes and break-ins than many other Western nations.
  • Political stability: A robust multi-party parliamentary system maintains democratic values and strong legal infrastructures.
  • Charter protection: Strict anti-discrimination laws protect individuals' rights regarding race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
💼 Economic and Workplace Opportunity
  • Robust job market: Diverse employment options thrive across key sectors like technology, healthcare, finance, and engineering.
  • Work-life balance: Canadian workplace culture strongly encourages taking vacation time to prevent employee burnout.
  • Pro-business climate: Straightforward procedures and local administrative support facilitate smooth setups for small businesses and startups.
🏔️ Inclusive Culture and Pristine Nature

  • Multicultural mosaic: Immigration is highly celebrated, with roughly 20% of the population originating from outside the country.
  • Unspoiled wilderness: Residents enjoy vast green spaces, lakes, and forests, which account for about 10% of total global forest cover.
  • Outdoor lifestyle: Cities integrate natural parks seamlessly, promoting year-round activities like camping, fishing, and winter sports.
As you can see, there are many things about living in Canada which may make sense for you. But, as you might suspect, not everything about Canada is "sunshine and roses", so tomorrow I'll write about the challenges in moving to Canada. It is essential for us to know both the benefits and the challenges of moving to Canada if we are going to make a choice which is best for us and our family. Once we know the benefits and challenges (as all places have both) we will be able to decide what is best, knowing some benefits may out weigh the challenges.
