Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About Labor Day

I've been writing about several uniquely Canadian holidays, but today I'm writing about a holiday which is basically the same in Canada as it is in the USA - Labor Day. This is what I've learned about Labor Day in Canada . . .

  • As in the US, it marks the end of summer, usually featuring parades, barbecues, and a long weekend, with most banks, schools, and government offices closed.
  • Both countries celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday in September.
  • And both countries have a Labor Day to honor workers and the labor movement.
  • Officially recognized as a national holiday in Canada in 1894, originating from worker demonstrations in Toronto in 1872.
  • A Labor Day tradition in Atlantic Canada is the Wharf Rat Rally in Digby, Nova Scotia, while the rest of Canada watches the Labor Day Classic, is a Canadian Football League event where rivals play on Labor Day weekend.
  • The Canadian International Air Show takes place along Toronto's waterfront for three days during the Labor Day weekend, the closing weekend of the Canadian National Exhibition.
You will find more information about Canadian Labor Day at this link.
