Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About Mount Revelstoke National Park

Forty-six years ago I met my husband on an active volcano in Northern California - yes, there is an active volcano in Northern California - Mount Lassen! So, of course, I am quite partial to Mount Lassen National Park in California - it is truly beautiful and one of the wonderful things about Lassen, is even though it is nearly 15,000 feet tall, you are able to hike to the top of Lassen in a relatively easy hike the whole family can enjoy together.

The Canadian National Park I am very happy to let you know about today is Mount Revelstoke National Park in British Columbia and like Mount Lassen, you are able to hike to the top of Mount Revelstoke taking just an easy hike with your entire family!

  • Mount Revelstoke National Park's crown jewel is a winding 26-kilometer (16-mile) paved drive which takes you from the dense river valley rainforest all the way up to the subalpine wildflower meadows.
  • The park boasts over 64 kilometers (40 miles) of trails. Popular short walks include the Giant Cedars Boardwalk (through 500-year-old cedar trees) and the Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk Trail (wetland birdwatching).
  • At the end of the Parkway, you can take a short walk to the summit of Mount Revelstoke (1,943m / 6,375 ft) to enjoy panoramic views of the Monashee, Selkirk, and Purcell mountain ranges.
  • Depending on the season, the lower areas of the park are popular for snowshoeing, fat biking, and cross-country skiing.
  • Mount Revelstoke National Park's dramatic elevation changes create distinct ecological zones, ranging from wet old-growth cedar and hemlock forests at the valley floor to tundra at the peaks.
  • It provides important habitat for large mammals such as grizzly bears, black bears, mountain goats, and the threatened woodland caribou.
  • Currently, Parks Canada is collecting wolverine DNA from hair samples in Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks to determine the presence and behavior of wolverine in relation to the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) and railway lines. This will help determine the potential need for and placement of crossing structures if the highway is expanded.
  • Mount Revelstoke National Park is famous for summer wildflower displays on the summit. Each year the meadows of the upper subalpine zone blossom into brilliant color by the middle of August.
  • From a gentle stroll among giant red cedars to stargazing atop an easily accessible peak, Mount Revelstoke National Park offers a mountain experience for most every visitor.
It sounds like Mount Revelstoke National Park is a place I would very much enjoy visiting for sure! You will find more information about it at this link.
