Thoughts From a "Lost Canadian" About Newfoundland and Labrador

As I look at photos of Newfoundland and Labrador, I can see why people want to live here as this area is beautiful! It has everything - oceans with Puffins and Whales, Icebergs, Mountains, Forests, Lakes, extremely interesting history, and modern cities - certainly visiting - or even living here - would leave you with experiences you may not find in other places for sure. What more could a person want?

  • The province includes the island of Newfoundland and a large mainland portion, Labrador, with 94% of the population living on the island.
  • It was a separate British Dominion and only joined Canada in 1949.
  • Vikings landed in L'Anse aux Meadows over 1,000 years ago, long before Columbus.
  • St. John's is considered the oldest city in North America, with Water Street dating back to the early 1600s.
  • Newfoundland operates on its own time zone, 30 minutes ahead of Atlantic Time.
  • Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal on Signal Hill in 1901.
  • Both the Newfoundland (a gentle, massive "nanny dog") and the Labrador Retriever originated here.
  • The coast is famous for viewing icebergs which drift down from Greenland.
  • The province features some of the oldest rocks and unique geological features in the world, such as the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park.
  • The Grand Banks are one of the foggiest places on Earth due to the mixing of cold and warm currents.
  • It is pronounced, "Newfoundland", not "Newfoundlund". Good to know!
I love how there is so much Nature to see and enjoy in Newfoundland and Labrador which when combined with the incredible history it makes this a place I hope to visit. You will find more information about Newfoundland and Labrador at this link.
